Sleep is something that we all need, whether we like it or not. Sleep is essential to a productive, happy, and motivated life. So, today I thought I would share with you all my top tips for good sleep. Hopefully, this helps some of you out that are struggling to get in good quality sleep.
1. Set Up A Routine
When I was younger, I had a bad spell where I slept terribly. One of the things that helped me the most to come out of this spell was a solid night time routine. So, since the young age of 12 I have always had a night routine that I stick to no matter what time I go to bed.
Within this routine I journal, mediate, pray, and read. The combination of these 4 things really helps me to calm down at the end of the day and triggers my brain to wind down from the day. If you want to learn more about this routine and journaling you can read HERE.
2. Get Exercise Throughout the Day
For many of us, we sit at a desk all day, and wind up getting very little exercise throughout the day. This can lead to restless sleep and can cause long term sleep problems. That is why I encourage you to get moving at least a little bit everyday.
This does not have to be anything crazy, it could be as simple as taking a walk, or doing some light stretching. But, no matter what you chose, try to move your body everyday.
3. Get Vitamin D
Just like exercise, it is important that we get enough sun exposure everyday so that we keep our circadian rhythm in sync. The circadian rhythm is very important for not only our sleep cycle, but also for hormone balance, eating habits, digestion, body temperature, and other important bodily function.
Therefore, it is important to spend enough time outside to make sure your internal sleep clock stays in check. If you live in a climate where you do not get a lot of exposure to sun, or you work night shifts, it may be worth investing in a Sun Light Lamp.
4. Try Melatonin
Sometimes our body gets out of rhythm, whether that be from traveling, day light savings time, a change in weather, or any other external factor. In times like this, it may be worth taking a Melatonin supplement to help you get some sleep.
Melatonin is naturally produced in our body when it is time for bed, so this form of supplement is a great natural alternative sleep aid. Although it is not good to take long term because your body becomes dependent on it, it may be worth taking to get back into rhythm.
5. Support Sleep with Essential Oils
If you have been following me for a while, you know I am a big believer in the benefits of essential oils for pain relief, sleep aid, and much more. So, naturally it makes sense that I showcase some of my favorite essential oil uses for sleep.
One of my favorite oil combinations that I diffuse every night is Lavender essential oils with a few drops of the Tranquility blend by Saje Wellness. Scent is a great way to trigger your brain to begin relaxing for sleep, and so that is why I diffuse these every night before bed.
I love to use the Sleep Well roller ball on my wrists and feet every night. Additionally, I love the Lavender Spray for misting on my sheets and pillows before bed. This whole combination allows me to drift off to sleep in no time.
One kit that I would highly recommend to get a great nights sleep is the Sleep Well Kit by Saje Wellness. It gives you all the essentials for a good night sleep in terms of your natural wellness products.
6. Invest in Good Blinds
It is so important to have a dark sleeping environment to allow you to doze off to sleep. Some people are more sensitive to light than others, so this may vary based on your personal needs. But personally, I find that I need complete darkness for good sleep. That is why I have invested in high quality blackout blinds and curtains. You can find these at your local home improvement store, or I know that IKEA offers some as well.
These blinds and curtains have really changed the game in terms of my sleep quality, so I definitely think they are worth investing in. However, if you don’t have the funds for that, or you are constantly on the move, I suggest purchasing a high quality sleeping mask. I love this sleeping mask from Saje Wellness because it has dried Lavender in it. However, I know you can find many good quality masks online.
7. Eliminate Technology In the Bedroom
You have heard this before, but eliminating technology before bed is such an important habit to get into it. To stop me from using my phone in bed and aimlessly scrolling through Instagram, I have installed an app called Quality Time on my phone which helps me to block any social apps at certain times of the day. To learn more about this app, check it out HERE.
But, overall, try to keep your phone away from you for at least 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep. Additionally, try to use a blue light filter on your phone 1-2 hours before bed. This will help with your sleep quality and cause less strain on your eyes as well.
Overall, these are my top 7 tips for sleeping. Let me know in the comments on my latest Instagram post, which tip helps you the most.
